English for Nurses

English for Nurses at Elanguest Language School in Malta. Our English for Nurses course builds on over 15 years' experience teaching Medical English courses

The Elanguest 'English for nurses' course is designed to meet the language demands specific to nurses working in an English speaking environment.

The English for Nurses course is focused on the diagnostic, communicative and administrative language specific to this branch of the medical profession.

As board members of the upcoming sTANDEM project, we take Medical English training seriously with over 15 years' experience in the field.

What does the course cover?

Giving priority to speaking, listening and writing, the English for nursing course focuses on the essential areas of nursing: patient registration, obtaining specimens, patient handover, post-operation assessment, discharge planning and an insight into the UK healthcare system. A variety of additional topics are also covered throughout the course including:

  • Writing patient care plans
  • Preparing patients for operations, wound treatments and monitoring pulse, blood pressure and temperature
  • Observing and recording the condition of patients
  • Checking and administering drugs and injections
  • Assisting with tests and evaluations
  • Carrying out routine investigations
  • Responding quickly to emergencies
  • Planning discharges from hospital and liaising with community nurses, GPs and social workers
  • Communicating with and relieving the anxiety of patients and their relatives
  • Advocating on behalf of patients
  • Educating patients about their health
  • Maintaining patient records
  • Making ethical decisions related to consent and confidentiality

Teaching Methods.

Through role play, small group activities, class discussions and case studies, students will take part in assignments that are authentic and relevant for their future careers/duties using a variety of materials and customised resources.

Monday - Friday: 9:00 am until 12:30 pm and then the afternoon lessons start again at 1:00 pm finishing at 2:30 pm.
